They can probably split up at some point if needed - basically Alex could go out and be gone for longer than he said he would looking for supplies? He'd try to veto the suggestion that she go out on her own but what he doesn't know can't can hurt him >:3

I'm not sure whether I'd rather her go out trying to find him because he's been gone for too long or waiting until she's sure he's far enough away that she can slip out and go exploring because she has cabin fever and sometimes makes terrible life choices. Maybe she can get herself in over her head and need Alex to swoop in to rescue her (after she's a little bit worse for the wear, because I am a horrible person)?

That would be terrible which means it should happen. I really like the idea of it sinking in that she's here and she'll be in danger no matter what Alex does or what body he has.
