thegamesooc | Long overdue intro post

Well hello there. I'm still in the 'nervous/out of step/waiting to get my sea legs' part of having joined a new community, so I figured, what better way to help get over that than to get to know people?

I'm the kind of person who likes to at least vaguely know where things are going before I start a thread - one of the things that made this community appealing, actually, the fact that you have less control over what happens to your character. I'm thinking that aspect of the games will help me learn to work around that tendency.

It also means I haven't jumped into as many (or, let's be honest, any) threads as I want to. That worry about getting boring or repetitive because I don't know where the thread is going is getting in my way. So. If anyone'd like to brainstorm some CR of any kind I'm game.

- Negative CR?
Roland does have a sense of humor, but he has little tolerance for too much silliness. Both his best friends are totally ridiculous so negative CR with class-clown types could potentially turn into positive of some kind, but either way if anyone wants to annoy the hell out of him I'm game. Anyone who takes joy in causing pain to others he definitely wouldn't like. I have no idea at all how someone trying to manipulate him would go, so I'd be up to try that out too, if anyone wants to go for it.

- Positive?
I'm not sure how positive CR would work in this setting, actually. Killing is a fact of Roland's life, but killing people who aren't really his enemies is kind of a new thing, so he may default to trying not to like anyone too much out of self defense, unless he's already connected with them somehow.

- Neutral/distantly positive?
Drinking buddies (though Roland doesn't drink enough to get drunk), or anyone willing to teach him poker? He'd be a good 'sitting quietly brooding together' partner, or any character who wants to quietly hang out with someone who won't ask too many questions.

Anyone with a character in district 4 want to either handwave or play out any kind of CR? I've tried to look up who all's in district 4 so hopefully I'll remember who Roland would recognize just from seeing them around, but it'd be neat to talk that out specifically if anyone wants to.

Two last questions (sorry): The whole 'in the public eye' aspect of this game is really interesting to me. How much of that gets directly played out? Or do we just assume a character has a certain public image and only mention it now and then in other threads? This is probably one of those things I'll get a hang of the longer I'm here, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Also... Mentor? Another page listed three npc mentors for district 4, do I just randomly choose one for Roland, or does he not have one at all?

I'm Mica, and I play Commander Shepard of the Mass Effect trilogy/franchise who is the Renegade hero of her own universe and the rest of you are just living in it, as they say. She's in D5, so no districtmate CR, sorry.

As far as I see it, I think the last two questions can most ably be answered by a 'depends'. Most people seem to handwave the mentor interactions, particularly when they are all NPCs— but you can play things out however you like. I like to address the 'in the public eye' aspect as often as is reasonable, in the narration and dialogue both, but that might only work for me because my character is savvy enough to have assumed that they're probably being filmed and bugged pretty much constantly.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head insofar as public image. It seems to pretty well be self-designed except where such a thing would contrast with mod fiat, of course. DM being functionally God if the fictional universe and all that.

Welcome to the Games, you seem like the kind of person who writes small novels in their posts. That's awesome.

That makes sense, thank you! I'm still not sure whether Roland would work out that they're being watched without someone telling him. On one hand he's familiar with the concept of having to watch what you say and maybe wary enough to figure out that the people in charge would want to keep an eye on them, but he's only a little familiar with super high tech stuff so. I'll probably just figure out how to address the public eye thing as it becomes more relevant to him.

Roland did note the post Shepard made, so as far as sort-of CR goes he's identified her as someone to keep an eye on. So they might see each other at some point.

As to reply length, my length tends to vary (especially when I'm on my phone), but I try. Novel-length replies can be a lot of fun to write, when I can do them. Thanks for the welcome!

Yo! This is bii (Susannah's mun) in my other character's journal. I'm not a mod or anything, but as far as public image goes, it's usually a thing that the player figures out for themselves and decides how they want it to impact their lives and how it changes from arena to arena?

I mean, it's not always player guided and handled, but with as many of us as there are the mods can't always figure that stuff out individually. But, like, when there was the event where our characters went to the Districts they represent, the mods had bits in the information sections about how the residents of the district reacted to them and stuff.

(Also, once we had a not-meme where we talked about our characters' fandoms, however large or small they may be. It was pretty cool.)

As far as mentors go, it's kind of assumed that the mentors, whether PC or NPC, generally share the tributes for mentoring. District for does currently have a PC mentor and he's even one from Hunger Games canon! That would be Finnick. Waffle's playing him.

(The District Association page only gets updated every few months, so it's kind of out of date more often than not. It's sometimes easier to do a search for the district on the taken page since they're listed there now.)

Anyway! The reason I'm asking with Karkat's account is that I was wondering if I could get some of that neutral/distantly positive CRs with my teenage bug person?

Yeah that makes sense. I'll probably be able to figure out how the public would think of him after his first arena.

And yes, of course! How do you think they'd meet? Cuthbert telling Karkat about Roland and Karkat going to check him out, or something else?

Yep! He might not register so much in the public eye until then, anyway, since he wouldn't have had the chance to do anything much they'd see.

Also, I have an idea for that, actually. It involves a slight amount of backdating, but after that big communication Hans made, Karkat was going to head directly to District Four to talk to his friend Nepeta (because Cuthbert was a jerk and a non-alien troll and said some things in the memo that made it sound like he'd Done It with Nepeta and Karkat wanted to make sure she was all right) and I haven't put the log up for that yet. But I figure I could incorporate his meeting with Roland into that in a separate thread in the same log, by having Karkat get there while Nepeta is busy with something or another and him sticking around D4 to talk to her and getting into a conversation with Roland.

If, like, Roland would be up to talking to a weird little mutie-looking kid who's grumbling really loudly about "stupid fucking Cuthbert."

That works! I really do think Roland would be interested to talk to anyone who's bitching about Cuthbert. XD The idea's also kind of amusing because Cuthbert's narration in one of the threads mentioned that he's nervous to tell Roland about the trolls. I like the idea of him being all nervous about it and then finding out Roland's already met like two of them and gave no shits about how nonhuman they were.

Awesome! Okay, I'm going to eat lunch and then I'll see about setting up that log. Ali and Sceadu (who'll also have threads) are probably getting exasperated with my tardiness.

Hi! Have to say, I'm so excited to see someone rping Roland and the DT cast here! I'm currently on my second reading of the series and just, yessss, so awesome.

I'd be very interested if we could ever get some CR between him and Clem, however that would work.

It's so rare to find someone who's into the series, yessss, high five. I do think it could work - as much as Roland should probably know better, I feel like he's more likely to trust a kid, especially someone around Jake's age. I see she's in district three, so Roland could be visiting a canonmate there and they could come across each other. Or any other dynamic you think they would have/any other way it could be fun for them to meet?

I was going to say all yes to this but due to a mix up in district assignments Clem has been moved to District 6 by the mods. Perhaps a possible chance meeting in the training centre communal areas or some forced Capitol social function instead?

Yeah. Roland's been told there's a library SOMEWHERE so he might be wandering around looking for it, or she could come across him once he finds it and starts trying to learn to read English. Or a social function/the lobby confronted by people waiting with cameras/whatever could be fun, since he still has no idea about their culture or how it works or how showy it is or anything like that. Or the training room. Basically I am bad at making decisions. XD Any of those sound like an interesting setting?

The library sounds like it could be fun! Roland gets help with his English from an 11 year old who hasn't been to school for three years, lol XD
