It’s sunrise, but no sun is visible. The sky above the inlet is delicately pink and silver, but only an indistinct, blue pre-dawn reaches down because the towering mountains, deep into this water-floored canyon.

The Cornucopia is set on a beach, with mud and gravel underfoot. The first thing to notice is the sound; the nearby waterfall is deafening, a massive white torrent close enough that spray billows around the tributes, condensing in hair and clothes. The massive golden horn, twice the height of any of the tributes, is set in the middle of the knee-deep run-off stream, surrounded by the supplies available to them. Weapons gleam in the water, and cans of supply. Waterproof bags float despite being fully loaded, already beginning to move downstream. Hurry to get them; they don’t have far to go to the cold, milky water of the sea and it’s a very, very cold swim.

Above the beach, the forest starts immediately. Towering cedars and firs hung with ancient moss, thick thickets of thorny undergrowth, overgrown ferns all make it harder to see more than a few dozen yards in any direction. Water is everywhere; dripping from the foliage, running down the rocky ground, saturating the omnipresent moss. You can’t go a hundred yards without crossing a stream, cold as ice, milky white, and barren of life. Waterfalls abound. Don’t worry, it’s safe to drink. It’s fire that will be rare here. Finding dry wood will be hard, and by the time you get anything lit, it’s probably going to be raining.

The forest is a steep world. The only flat land at all is the beach. From there, it rises steeply up towards the sky, a direct slope up to the snow-line at three thousand yards, the peaks white and dangerous above. There are cliffs to watch out for, sudden precipitous breaks in the mountainside that rise above the sea of trees, soaring walls of stone. Landslide scars streak their faces, freshly-broken stone bright against the older facades, and piles of rubble slope their bases.

Days here are short. The sun doesn’t climb above the high surrounding mountains until nearly noon, and disappears on the other side barely six hours later. The walls of the inlet hold heat well, but the nights get cold, especially to those sleeping near any of the dozens of ice-water streams.

The Cornucopia is your first, most important resource. Around it are scattered the available weapons:
1 sword
1 steel-handled hatchet
1 shortbow
12 arrows
2 machetes
5 knives, assorted
1 baseball bat
many blank cans, presumed to contain foodstuffs.
10 watertight bags, contents unknown, labelled with letters. A - H
Unfortunately, it stands on a tide flat. One hour after the starting gong, the rising tide will scour it empty, sending everything left behind out into the ocean.

Immediate hazards:
The water is cold. No, really, this can’t be stressed enough. Anyone swimming is risking hypothermia immediately.
The waterfall immediately beyond the cornucopia is powerful enough to kill anyone stepping under its torrent. Its basin is also full of massive logs and boulders. Remember how they got there.
Red Tide. Despite the name, this is invisible. Your only clue is going to be the numbness in your lips after you try to take advantage of the abundant edible shellfish on the beach. Unfortunately, that means it’s already too late, and the paralysis will spread until it reaches your lungs.

** Ursus Arctos Horribilis. Grizzly bears. Four-hundred pounds of get-out-of-my-berry-patch. They live in the lower reaches of the forest, frequenting anywhere food can be found. They are aggressive and predatory, and tribute tastes better than the worms they find under logs.
** Black Vultures. Large scavenger birds, these are only too happy to take a peck at a sleeping human, and their filthy beaks guarantee an infection.
** Lion’s Mane Jellyfish. If the cold of the seawater doesn’t get you, these probably will. Their sting is non-fatal, but... Well, imagine a sewing machine made of bee-stings, running all over your skin. Peeing on it doesn’t actually work.
** Food animals: Worms under logs. Squirrels, birds, rabbits in the forests, fish in the saltwater. Deer are rare, and killing one will draw bears right to you.

Edibles are plentiful, actually. There are berries aplenty, mushrooms, edible rootplants. Unfortunately, there are just as many poisonous alternatives to all of these. If you know what you’re looking for, you are probably safe in foraging. If you don’t, be warned. There are 14 kinds of red berries. Two of them are food, seven are poisonous, and the rest will do horrible things to your guts. Mushrooms run about the same risks, and roots pretty much all look the same, even those of the nightshade plant.
Animals, at least, are always edible, except for the contaminated shellfish.

Ken will go for a knife but he'll only stop to snag a bag if there's one close/on the way.

Shepard is totally going for it, since this is just like a really weird morning for her, more than something she's super afraid of doing. She'd probably go for a machete and one of the bags, since those seem the most useful at a glance.

Emily definitely goes for the cornucopia with the intent of snagging the bow and arrows, a machete, a knife, and as many cans and bags as she can get her hands on.

Yutaka does not trust the contents of the cans, and he thinks (perhaps accurately) that everyone will be busy fighting for the bags and the more effective weapons. So he'll make a lunge for the baseball bat, and then--whether successful or not--he'll dash straight toward the woods. This is a boy who really likes hiding in the woods.

Ariadne will be going for a knife and one of the bags, as well as a couple of the cans.

Mary will probably go the scavenger route and try to grab whatever least interests other people, or whatever they're too busy fighting over to notice her grabbing. So, mainly cans and a bag if it's close

She'll get her courage up to try for the hatchet, though, because it looks useful to have in a forest and it makes her feel like a lumberjack.

If you need someone to kill her, I volunteer!

Awesome! Anything in mind?

Well, at the moment, on her way to the Cornucopia, it'd probably be real easy to hold someone under the water until they drowned, if they were to try and impede her...

[personal profile] misscellophane 2012-04-01 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
That could definitely work! Mary's not too strong, and she was also trying to get some cans of food.

Could also set it a little later and have the tide be a factor in that?

[personal profile] ssa_emilyprentiss 2012-04-01 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds good. Emily's staying near the Cornucopia in the aftermath, so it'd be easy to pick off any scavengers after the bloodbath.
misscellophane: (Yay!)

[personal profile] misscellophane 2012-04-01 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Mary would definitely be one of those scavengers, so I think that'd be perfect!

Tate is going to make a run for a machete, a knife and a bag.

[personal profile] forgetfulmind 2012-03-31 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Amy is going to go for whatever's furthest floating down the stream, and she'll be running straight away from the Cornucopia. She'll basically make a grab at it as it's floating past and she won't even slow down. From there, running straight away and into the forest.

LOL okay awesome.

Couple questions: What material are the arrows made out of? What's the quiver look like? And how deep is the stream? (i.e., how much of Amy's body will be hella cold while she's running.)

Super late with this but ahhhh.

Lily will try going to go for it, aiming for either a knife or machete, and a bag.

So... Garrus would have spent 20 credits on food in the last three days? He's trying to make it last since, haha, he can't eat anything that isn't specialized for him.

:D that's it!
